ST PANCRAS INTERNATIONAL
THE MEETING PLACE STATUE

Following the selection of Paul Day as the sculptor for the Meeting Place statue at St Pancras Station, we were asked to make a presentation to the media on Valentine’s Day, giving details of the design process.

This was held at the St Pancras Gymnasium, and the pictures show the seven elements that were combined to produce the final maquette. We thought this would mark the completion of the job, but we were then asked to produce the selected design as a 9.2m cut out and install it within the station. This was done so that the architects and client could have a better appreciation of the size and scale of the work they were commissioning.

The challenge for us was that we were only given four hours to erect the scaffold, install the Foamex cut-out and then dismantle and clear away. We also had to ensure that all Health and Safety considerations were followed during the operation.

Again we felt that was the end of our involvement in the project, only to be asked to construct the base for the final statue to be installed and then to determine and mark out its final resting place. This was achieved with the use of lasers to ensure positioning with pin-point accuracy.

The final element of our work was to be in attendance during the process of installation. The 7.5 tonne statue was transported from the foundry in Essex, and was carefully craned on to our base. The whole process took a total of six hours to complete.
