This unique event was a special celebration to mark the completion of High Speed 1, part of London’s Channel Tunnel rail link.
LCR decided that the best way to mark this milestone was to invite the 2,500 principle engineers involved in the construction to attend a party on Kings Cross land overlooking the final approach to St Pancras International used by Eurostar trains. As Principle Contractor, it was our job to ensure that the operation went smoothly, and that all procedures were in accordance with CDM Regulations.
The project began with land levelling which required 5,300 tonnes of crushed rock to stabilise the ground following near continuous rain in July and August. Once the ground issues had been resolved, the roof structure which spanned 80m x 65m had to be raised by six 100-tonne cranes operating simultaneously to a height of 9m. Fortunately the day this was undertaken the weather turned to bright sunshine and the prevailing winds dropped to a safe tolerance for us to undertake this work.
We then had two weeks of sunshine, and these conditions enabled us to complete the project install the interiors and run a truly splendid event.
