During excavations for Channel Tunnel Rail Link 2, from south of the Thames to St Pancras, some 6,000 historical artefacts were discovered – including the tusk of a woolly mammoth, Saxon coins, brooches and pins, earthenware pots, funeral plates and a vast array of other materials.
Our task, in collaboration with the Museum of London, was to display these items to the public. Under the instructions of Helen Glass of Arup Archaeology we constructed seven show cases, four of which were hermetically sealed to protect the fragile contents. The display is linked with an audio-visual presentation and excellent graphic copy, to give a clear insight into the artefacts that have been uncovered, some of which are on permanent display within the showcases. Other items are now stored in a repository at Lincoln.
